Rousseau begins in the opening of The Social Contract, "Man is born free, but is everywhere in chains." Man longs for the good and pursues the eternal. The more innocent and carefree a person is, the more likely they are to become a pessimist. The pursuit of freedom, in the ultimate sense, is impossible. What we seek is only relative freedom. In other words, we impose chains on ourselves. Therefore, Cicero said, "In order to obtain freedom, we must be servants of the law." Now we see many people complaining about working 996 (9 am to 9 pm, 6 days a week), and I also complain, but many people choose to obey, while others choose the minimum level of survival. By paying the rational price for what we seek for ourselves, we will obtain true freedom.
